Aiea Amenities and Recreation
Aiea is the home of Pearlridge, Hawaii’s largest enclosed shopping center and second largest shopping center in the state. The mall is separated into two sections, known as Uptown and Downtown, includes the only monorail in Hawaii, the only hospital located on mall property (Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi), and Hawaii’s largest watercress farm (Sumida Farm).
Aloha Stadium, home of the University of Hawaiʻi Warriors football team, and the host site for the Hawaiʻi Bowl every Christmas Eve and the National Football League’s Pro Bowl every February.
One well-known and beloved park in Aiea is the Keaiwa Heiau – an ancient medical shrine. This park that spans 384 acres holds four campsites and is available for tent camping from Friday through Wednesday. Hiking is the best activity in the recreation area. Although not that strenuous, the hike involves some uphill climbs with a steep switchback and a stream crossing at the end of the trail.
The trail has muddy terrain, so prepare yourself for some heavy leg work out. It usually takes a maximum of three hours before you get to the end of the trail, so when the going gets tough, just let the scent of eucalyptus and the sound of the hummingbirds relax you as you stride along.
